about

This album took 7 years to record and release after Doom Saloon.

It was supposed to be sooner, but like, we were doing stuff. The Rise Above version of Doom Saloon took a while to come out and so we were busy kicking along on that from 2002-2005 which culminated in DD and B-Rad promoting Australia's thus far only visit from the almighty Electric Wizard for 8 amazing shows in late October early November 2005.

Then Josh had a daughter while we finished the writing and eventually made the decision to record in Melbourne at Toyland Studios in Northcote. We did have a conversation with DW Norton about doing it at Backbeach again, but our budget wasn't up to the heady levels of Doom Saloon.

Jason PC of Blood Duster had started Goatsound Studios in the early 2000's and offered to help us, so we decided to go with Goatsound for the recording and domestic release. Jason was still building his studio at this time so we needed an awesome room to track drums in and Toyland has a particularly good one.

We tracked drums, rhythm guitars and bass in a two day session with Jason and Adam Calaitzis who owns the place. Josh went down AFL grand final weekend in 2007 (Geelong won by 119 points) to finish the guitars and Brad after that to do the vocals.

It was then mixed by Mr PC and mastered by John Ruberto at Crystal Mastering in Melbourne where all our other stuff was mastered previously.

The artwork was a collaboration with Glenn "Glenno" Smith, someone who should be very familiar to Australian heavy music fans by now, with works for a myriad of Australian artists and his own pieces filling a killer portfolio.

Glenn had first contacted Josh in the late 90's and always been a close friend of Pod People, so when this album was ready for the artwork, Josh drove to Sydney to meet in the beer garden at the Courthouse hotel in Newtown.

Armed with another pile of poorly drawn notes based this time on the Purgatorio chapter of Dante Alighieri's The Divine Comedy. The albums title, Mons Animae Mortuorum is Latin for "Mountain where the souls of the dead reside" is tied to the artwork of Mt Purgatory.

The 7 P's at the bottom above the Mt Purgatory greeter Cato, represent each of the 7 deadly sins and are placed on the forehead of those wishing to scale the mountain and absolve themselves so the 7 deadly sins on each of the 7 terraces. At the top is the garden of Eden and the glowing circle above the mountain is not the moon, but the concentric circles of Paradise, heaven.

Glenn drew and then painted this in shellac in a piece of art that is now hanging framed in the Goatsound Studios in Melbourne.

The rear of the insert is a stunning Ouija board that isn't drawn, but actually carved into an A1 or so sized board and then lacquered. There are some other photos in the extras of some of the notes Glen made while creating this artwork for us.

Glenno and good mate Ross Radiation also made a killer animated video for track 6 Liar you can check here - www.youtube.com/watch?v=rbso7F3NjPM

Suffice to say it was utterly humbling what an amazing job our friends did to make this album happen. We are super grateful for knowing these amazing human beings that helped us so much.
